Iowa Warned of Mitt Romney's Abortion Stance by Automated Message

GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s abortion stance is under attack again – this time by a disembodied robo-foe texting sleeping Iowans about a speech the candidate made almost two decades ago.

According to an NBC report, people in Iowa have received text messages reading “Romney exposed at 2012 caucuses. Romney pro life??” in the early morning. Calling the text’s original number triggers an automated message introducing an old Romney speech in which he claims to be pro-choice.

“Mitt Romney on life,” the ghost voice announces.

“As a nation, we recognize the right of all people to believe as they want and not to impose our beliefs on other people,” Romney’s voice says.

“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country,” Romney continues on the recording. “I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it. And I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice.”

The speech comes from an Oct. 25, 1994 U.S. Senate debate in which Romney battled Senator Ted Kennedy for a Massachusetts seat.

Sources were unable to identify who commissioned or originated the idea to send audio of the speech throughout Iowa.

The GOP presidential frontrunner in some circles, Romney admitted at the final GOP debate before the Iowa primary that he changed his mind about abortion.

In the Dec. 15 debate in Sioux City, Iowa, Fox News’ Chris Wallace pressed Romney on a number of issues on which the candidate had been accused of changing his stance. Wallace’s most pointed prod questioned whether Romney’s positions are based on “principle or politics.”

Romney clarified his stance on abortion immediately.

"I changed my mind. I'm firmly pro-life. I've learned over time. Like Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush and others. My experience in life over [19] years has told me that sometimes I was wrong,” Romney said.

Many of the GOP candidates have attacked Romney – the former Governor of Massachusetts – on his change of heart, claiming he’d only become pro-life to pander to the party’s conservative base.
