iPad 3 Development Begins, Apple in No Rush to Release

Industry insiders indicate that there are already prototypes for the iPad 3 circling. However, a third-generation of the tablet computer most likely won’t be released until 2012.

Analyst with J.P. Morgan, Mark Moskowitz notes that the success of the iPad 2 as well as the fact that competing tablets are not doing as well means that Apple can take its time in developing a new product.

"In our view, Apple should be in no rush," said Moskowitz. "The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012."

The iPad 2 was released in March 2011 and its success and continuing demand immediately spurred rumors, which have persisted throughout the year, of an updated version of the current model or a completely new iPad 3.

In July, it was reported that an “iPad 3" part had allegedly been discovered and that the part suggested the model would have a "brand-new design."

However, other reports say that an updated iPad 2 may possibly be released, featuring a higher resolution display.

According to Apple Insider, no other tablet computer has reached the level of the iPad 2 by way of sales and popularity.

The iPad currently dominates the mobile tablet industry with approximately 69 percent of the total market share, according to Gartner (April 2011). The industry is expected to reach $49 billion by 2015, according to Strategy Analytics.

Research in Motion announced on Thursday that only 200,000 of its PlayBook tablets have been shipped, a far cry from the almost 9.25 million iPads that have been sold in the current fiscal quarter.
