iPad 3 Release Date Confirmed for March 16, Pre-orders Start Today

The iPad 3 release date will be on March 16, according to an announcement made by Apple at its media event in San Francisco today.

News of this date first surfaced when a new Apple retail location in Houston decided to push its grand opening a day forward from the 17 to the 16 of March.

The move seemed like it was purposely made to accommodate the iPad.

The company was set to open a store in Houston in the Highland village shopping center located at Westheimer and Drexel in January.

An inside source stated that the stores opening was brought forward a day to March 16 to coincide with the release of the iPad 3 on that date.

The new iPad will be available on March 16 in the U.S., Canada, UK France, Germany Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

Apple will begin taking pre-orders for the tablet today.

The third generation iPad will feature a high definition Retina display that will have 2048x1536 pixel resolution with 4G LTE connectivity. The device will also include a dual-core A5X chip that will have a quad-core graphics processor specifically for gaming.

Other specifications on the new iPad include a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording in HD and a battery capable of lasting 9 hours on 4G and 10 hours on 3G. The device will still function on 3G networks and function as a personal hotspot for its owners.

It will cost the same as the current iPad starting at $499 for the lowest grade model. It will be available on AT&T and Verizon.
