iPhone 5 Release: Can Device Help Apple Gain Market Share Against Android?

Android came out on top once again as the largest smartphone market share holder, beating out Apple in the month of August, according to Nielsen Mobile Insights data.

Google’s system dominated the market accounting for 43 percent of all smartphone users, which is up from the systems 40 percent share in July.

Apple came in as a not so close second with 28 percent of the market share for August, a figure which has remained the same since June, according to Nielson.

But Android is not gaining its market share from Apple.

In fact, other OS users switching over to Android powered smartphones attribute to the system's competitive edge over Apple.

Nielson has an “others” category which includes operating systems such as Windows and Palm created OSs. Their market share fell from 13 percent to 11 percent.

RIM also suffered a one percent decline which did not help matters for Apple since most other smartphone users seem to jump ship to Android powered devices.

This is the first summer in a last few years that Android was not met with a new iPhone model to compete with since the next generation iPhone will not be available until sometime in October.

With the iPhone 5’s release, Apple has a good chance of gaining more market share in the fall.

Other OS creators such as Microsoft and RIM are also launching new devices with updated systems including RIM’s OS 7 and Windows Mango.

Apple’s new iPhone 5 is rumored to be unveiled at a media event on October 4 followed by an official launch on the 14 of the month.

But for now those are all rumors.

Android’s Samsung Galaxy S2 handset has also made a significant impact in the smartphone market for Google’s OS which will likely solidify its spot as the leader.
