iPhone 4S Releases Oct. 14, Pre-orders Begin FridayIt was a wild public relations ride by Apple with frenzied rumors circulating that an iPhone 5 was to be launched. However, new Apple CEO Tim Cook took the world by surprise and disappointed eager buyers by announcing Tuesday that there would not be an iPhone 5, but only an iPhone 4S.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S will be made available Oct. 7, with actual handsets being made available on Oct. 14.
The good news is that Sprint customers will now get the superphone as well as AT&T and Verizon. Apple stock closed down 4 percent following the announcement Tuesday.

Sprint has bought up 30 million iPhone 4S’s—that’s more than $600 each—and Wall Street was initially hesitant to support the investment. It could take the #3 cell phone company up to four years to recoup the $20 billion dollars those phones cost. Sprint stock recovered after Cook’s initial Apple announcement at 10:00 a.m. PST yesterday.
With the new IOs 5 operating system, Cook said the new iPhone 4S will feature all new insides including the same processor as the iPad 2 and a “digital assistant” voice recognition feature called Siri that can be used to place calls, send e-mails and text messages or tell you if you need a umbrella. Sprint’s new 4s will have a new 8 megapixel camera, shoot hi-def video 1080 video and carry a souped-up power cell capable of 8 hours of talk time.
Apple’s new CEO said iOS 5, which will be available for download Oct. 12, has 500,000 developers working on apps.
The company also debuted iCloud, also available Oct. 12, which will let users stream music and photos from the remote cloud servers.
Users won’t have to switch to Sprint in order to get the new iPhone, but they will have another provider resource just in case.
