iPhone 5 to Be Called 'The New iPhone'?

Apple will most likely be calling its sixth generation smartphone "the new iPhone," according to tech site 9to5 Mac.

The publication was tipped off by an industry insider who said that the Cupertino based company would be dropping the number off the end of the name before it launched "the new iPad" earlier this week.

The fact that Apple has decided to launch its third-generation tablet as "the new iPad" shows that this information does have some validity.

Another piece of information to factor into the equation is the fact that the next iPhone will not be the fifth generation, but the sixth, so it would make sense to not call it the iPhone 5.

The smartphone is expected to sport a brand new design that differs greatly from the current iPhone 4S that barely changed at all from its predecessor the iPhone 4.

The main reason Apple has decided to chop the suffix off of the iPad is because the company wants to perform a branding makeover that it hopes will expand the lines.

"Just like iMac is not called iMac 1, 2, 3 it looks like Apple won't be doing the numbering on iOS devices," wrote 9to5Mac.

"The new iPhone" is also rumored to be using Gorilla Glass 2 for its display that will give the device a much more dependable screen, unlike older iPhone models that normally shatter when dropped.

It also should be a 4G LTE device on several networks since Apple has already made the jump to Verizon and AT&T with 4G with its new iPad.

Other rumored specifications include an A6 quad-core processing chip with a drastically redesigned frame sporting a much larger display. NFC (near-field communications) is possibly another feature that Apple can implement on the new device.

The new iPhone should debut sometime this summer.
