James Cameron Stands By His Criticism Of 'Wonder Woman': 'Avatar' Director Says Film Wasn't Groundbreaking
James Cameron is not backing down from his criticism of Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman." The "Avatar" director even doubled down on his comments saying the sexualization of its star Gal Gadot is the issue.
The Academy Award-winning director recently voiced out his opinion of the film which he believed to be "misguided" and "a step backward" in terms of female representation in Hollywood. Needless to say, Jenkins and many fans criticized Cameron for his comments.
"James Cameron's inability to understand what "Wonder Woman" is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though he is a great film-maker, he is not a woman," Jenkins wrote on Twitter. "Strong women are great."

However, instead of backing down, Cameron said he stands by his beliefs. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that his comments were in the context of Linda Hamilton's role as Sarah Connor in "Terminator," calling that role "a breakthrough in its time."
"I mean, she was Miss Israel, and she was wearing a kind of bustier costume that was very form-fitting," Cameron said. "She's absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. To me, that's not breaking ground."
Cameron added that while he applauds Jenkins and Hollywood for allowing a woman to helm a major action film, he just doesn't think that there was anything groundbreaking about Wonder Woman.
According to Cameron, he thinks that the film was good, period. He admits that his comment may have been too simplistic but he is not walking back from it. He also admitted that he like the fact that sexually, Gadot's character had the upper hand with the male character.
Cameron is currently working on four "Avatar" sequels the first of which is not expected to be released until 2020. He is also expected to work on the upcoming "Terminator" film with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton.
