Jeremy Lin News: Nets PG Reveals The Reason Behind His Dreadlocks
Brooklyn Nets point guard Jeremy Lin has been making headlines with his hairdos for years such as sporting a full on mohawk, double braids, and mini-ponytail. That still seems to be the case as the NBA star recently talked about his new dreadlocks.
Ever since his unexpected winning turnaround with the New York Knicks in 2012 was dubbed "Linsanity" by fans, Lin has been constantly under the media spotlight. However, articles devoted to him have had as much to do with his crazy hair than with his skills with the ball.
Recently, Lin wrote a piece for The Players Tribune talking about his new do. He talked about his journey to get them and his thoughts about the topic of cultural appropriation.
According to Lin, he was unsure about whether to get the dreads. He even consulted several people about his decision to make sure he wasn't deviating into the realm of cultural appropriation.
One of these people was Savannah Hart, a Nets staff member who's African-American. She told Lin that if it wasn't his intention to be dismissive of another culture, then maybe it could be an opportunity to learn about that culture.
While Lin did choose to go ahead and get himself some dreads, his decision is not beyond reproach. The NBA star repeated his requests for fans and ordinary people to give their thoughts about his new do. "I don't have the answers," he said.
He added that his decision does not mean that everyone should feel free to get braids or dreads or that his actions are enough to smooth over the real misunderstandings that exist around race and cultural identity. However, the process that started about hair turned into something even more, at least for him.
Lin ended the article by saying that he hopes his decision is a start, not an end, to more dialogue about our differences.
