'Jessica Jones' Season 2 - The Spoilers: Secondary Characters To Play More Prominent Roles

Fans of Netflix's "Jessica Jones" should expect to see less of the titular superheroine and more of the supporting characters in the show's sophomore season.

In a recent chat with Nerdist, "Jessica Jones" showrunner Melissa Rosenberg spoke about what viewers can expect when the Marvel series returns with its second season. According to Rosenberg, season 2 will pull the spotlight away from Jessica Jones a bit so that the secondary characters can also shine. This means that the show's storylines will not rely solely on Jessica and that not every scene will revolve around the superheroine. This new scheme enables Rosenberg to give Ritter a much-needed break while also giving more of the spotlight to the other characters.

As the "Jessica Jones" boss explained, she and her team has spent a lot of time during the show's freshman season fleshing out characters such as Will Simpson (Wil Traval) and Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor). This was done to prepare them for their own storylines in the upcoming second season.

"You have to earn secondary character stories," Rosenberg said. "You have to flesh them out enough so they can eventually carry stories of their own, which is very much what season 1 was about."

"So I'm hopeful I can at least give [Ritter] a day off in the six month period," she told the outlet.

"This is a very, very hardworking woman," the showrunner explained. "I think it's important that there be some balance."

During the interview, Rosenberg also revealed that in the new season, Jessica will be dealing with the aftereffects of her final encounter with Kilgrave (David Tennant), which just may place her in an even more fragile mental state than she was in during the first season.

"Jessica Jones" will resume production later this year. Ritter recently told IGN that season 2 will be shot back-to-back with the first season of "The Defenders."

Netflix has not announced the official release date for the second season of "Jessica Jones."
