Johnny Depp Close Call: Recounts Near Death Incident Filming The Lone Ranger (VIDEO)
Johnny Depp recounted a close call on the set of The Lone Ranger as he featured on The Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday night.
The Hollywood actor was reported to have suffered a near death incident on the set of the new movie in October last year. Not many details about the incident were made available at that time, but the actor offered an insight into what happened as he was interviewed by David Letterman this week.
Depp said on the late night talk show: "The horse was unaware that the saddle I was wearing to sit on top of it was jury-rigged, kind of faked … to give the effect that I'm riding bareback. So basically it's not very tight on the horse. So when we came down, the saddle slipped and I went to the left and had the reins here and somehow had the wherewithal to grab the mane of the horse."

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star explained that as he was dangling off the side of the horse he had one main thought running through his mind: "Hooves. Mind the hooves."
He explained that he did eventually fall to the ground from the horse and could have been fatally crushed by the horse, however, luckily it jumped over the actor, who admittedly came to within inches of his life.
Depp said: "I landed on my back, hit the deck pretty hard and the one thing that saved me was the horse's instinct to lift his front legs and go over me, step over me. Had he not, it was coming straight down into the head."
The Lone Ranger will be released later in 2013, and will be an action Western film directed by Gore Verbinski, and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the American Old West character serials of the same title.
The film stars Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as Tonto.
