Kate Winslet Reunites With James Cameron For 'Avatar' Sequel
Actress Kate Winslet is reuniting with director James Cameron to play a starring role in his upcoming "Avatar" films. Winslet previously worked with Cameron on his previous billion-dollar blockbuster "Titanic" in 1997.
Winslet recently starred opposite Idris Elba in the romance disaster survival film "The Mountain Between Us" set to be released this week. According to a source familiar with Cameron's films, the 41-year old actress will play the pivotal character Ronal in the sequel.
"Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on 'Titanic,' which was one of the most rewarding of my career," Cameron said in an interview with Deadline which broke the news. "I can't wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life."
It should be noted that 20 years ago, Winslet told the Los Angeles Times that she would only work with Cameron again "for a lot of money." This was due to her getting pneumonia during the filming for "Titanic," where she and many actors spent hours drenched in water.
Winslet will join cast members from the 2009 film including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang as well as new additions, including "Fear the Walking Dead star, Cliff Curtis."
The film began production last in Sept. 25 and is set to be released on Dec. 18, 2020. This will be followed by the second sequel which is set to open on Dec. 17, 2021, followed by "Avatar 4" on Dec. 20, 2024, and finally, "Avatar 5" on Dec. 19, 2025.
"Titanic," Winslet's previous work with Cameron went on to win 11 Oscars in the 1997 Academy Award and earn her a nomination. It was also the highest-earning film of all time unadjusted for inflation with $2.187 billion until it was supplanted by "Avatar" in 2009. By joining the film's cast, Winslet might have the opportunity to star in another of Cameron's billion-dollar blockbusters.
