Kim Kardashian Leaves Sketchers, Company to Pay $40 Million for False Fitness Claims

Sketcher's pitch person Kim Kardashian has stopped promoting Shape-Ups after the company came under fire for falsely advertising the shoe.

The Federal Trade Commission determined that Sketchers Shape-Ups made unfounded claims that wearing the shoe help people lose weight. The company also claimed that the special shoe would help strengthen muscles in the legs, butt, and stomach.

When she first appeared in advertisements, Kardashian claimed Shape-Ups helped tone her lower body.

Kardashian signed a 1-year contract with Sketchers which expired in January, but even before it ended she stopped promoting the shoe after hearing about false advertising, reported TMZ.

In addition to Kardashian, "Dancing with the Stars" host and swimsuit model Brooke Burke served as a spokesperson for Sketchers Shape-Ups.

Sketchers has agreed to pay $40 million in refunds to consumers who are disappointed in the shoe. The settlement also mandates that Sketchers cease making unsubstantial claims about health and fitness benefits of Shape-Ups.

FTC also alleged that Sketchers made misleading claims about its Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-Up Shoes, which cost between $60 and $100 a pair.

Shape-Ups, introduced in April 2009, cost about $100 a pair. Consumers who bought the Sketchers sneakers can learn more and file for a refund at ftc.gov/Sketchers.

On Twitter, Sketchers customers are sounding off about the misleading adverts as well as Kardashian's promotion of Shape-Ups.

"Straight up sham," wrote Kirk. "Not shocked she is involved @TMZ: Feds: Kim Kardashian Hocked BOGUS shoes."

"Did you get Sketcher's Shape-Ups," posted Metro Boston. "Cuz those shoes are not the reason Kim Kardashian's got those legs."

Twitter user Mike wrote, "Surprise, surprise. Class action suit against Sketchers for Shape-Ups."

"Sooo shocking," wrote Hannah. "#Sketchers has to pay $40 mil for their unfounded/unsupported claims that it helps lose weight and shape muscles. #stupidproduct"

"Makes me angry how much money Sketchers and other brands have made off of those stupid shape up shoes," posted Jessica. "News flash: they don't work."
