LeBron James Cuts Down Social Media Activity to Focus on Playoffs
Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James made the headlines a couple of days ago when he "unfollowed" his own team on Twitter, offering no explanation as to why he did it. But the issue may finally have been put to rest after he indicated that he's just trying to switch to "playoff mode" by limiting his social media activity.
Surely there's a lot of negative things going out there, especially with all the bashers and critics who make it a living to make an issue out of anything from celebrities to professional athletes. For James, this is familiar territory for him. Over the past couple of years, the 31-year old star shifts to a more serious mode whenever the playoffs nears, though it certainly looks like he's making the switch earlier than usual.
According to a report from ESPN, the Twitter issue started when he "unfollowed" his team's official Twitter and Instagram accounts right after the Cavs' 124-91 romp over the Denver Nuggets. Instead of gladly welcoming to answer questions as to why he did, he just told reporters, "next question," fueling rumors that there's a brewing animosity between him and the team.
But the way things are going right now, there is no time for gimmicks like this. After all, the act may have been just a part of the entire "playoff mode" thing for him. Even a two-time champion and four-time MVP could easily get distracted by everything that's being talked about in social media, so it probably is a wise decision to shut it down, at least for the entire duration of the playoffs.
James is one of the few basketball stars who show utmost commitment to winning a championship. He returned to his hometown in the hope of giving this franchise its first ever NBA title. Cleveland hasn't been that successful in pro sports and the biggest hope of getting a championship lies in the hands of James and his Cavaliers.
For him, taking on the Golden State Warriors and winning another title is certainly a big enough challenge. Social media will have to wait.
