Lecrae Encourages Lil Wayne and Rick Ross to Create More Conscious, Well-Rounded Music

Lecrae addressed hip-hop stars Lil Wayne and Rick Ross in an interview with HotNewHipHop this week.

Instead of focusing on what he disagrees with about their music, the Grammy award-winning rhymer encouraged both of them to talk more about the ups and downs of life.

"The average person is trying to figure out what the heck to do with their lives, and how to russle with ups and downs," said Lecrae to HotNewHipHop. "I'd love to see Rick Ross and Wayne address that stuff, but it makes rappers feel less like supermen. It's not shame to either one of them but I think their fans would love to hear that."

Lecrae received a good amount of backlash from some in the Christian community who feel he has dumbed down the Gospel message on many of his recent projects in order to minister to the mainstream. He's even been criticized for collaborating with secular artists such as Big K.R.I.T., who appears on his 2012 album Gravity and Paul Wall, who raps alongside him on his latest project Church Clothes 2.

Lecrae does not believe he is contradicting his faith by working with these artists as long as the songs make sense and fit into the context of his other records which are positive and Christ-centered.

"They don't live in the same world I live in or the detriment of the culture. They also don't see artists as people, they see them as characters," said Lecrae regarding his critics. "Like Paul Wall- I told him this is what I want the song to talk about, and he was cool with it and respected where I was coming from. I think we make rules up for music that God never wrote. We're not doing strip songs together."

Paul Wall appears on the track "Let It Whip."
