While the entire world zeroed in on Berlin and San Francisco during the past few days, Lenovo quietly launched its new flagship modular phone, the Moto Z, in Beijing Tuesday. It is set out to become an industry leader as the world's thinnest premium smartphone at 5.2mm thick, and is in many ways a landmark device especially as the first flagship phone developed since Lenovo acquired Motorola.
The smartphone arena has been largely shaped by the forces of Samsung and Apple's rivalry, but the Moto Z poses serious competition to both tech giants, especially with its amped-up specs and improved features and accessories. How does the Moto Z stack up against its latest rival, the new iPhone 7, which launched two days after?

Specifications and hardware
As we found out yesterday, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus comes in two variants: a 4.7 inch with a 1336 x 750 AMOLED screen resolution, and a 5.5 inch with 1920 x 1080 resolution. It is powered by the A10 fusion, and boasts the longest battery life among all the iPhone iterations. It starts at a 32 GB internal storage and can ramp up to 128 GB.
The Moto Z, on the other hand, is built with a 5.5 inch AMOLED screen with a display resolution of 2560 x 1440. It is packed with 32 GB and 64 GB internal storage capacity, powered by 4GB of RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and a 2,600 mAH battery.
Upgrades and features
Unlike the modular Lenovo Moto Z, the iPhone 7 does not really offer more functions and applications that could radically change Apple's game. While it has impressively boosted specs, its biggest change had been to do away with the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of Lightning ports and wireless headsets. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, introduced the dual-camera system in the iPhone series, with 12 MP and 7 MP rear and front shooters, respectively.
But for smartphone enthusiasts who love surprises and gimmickry, the Moto Z will definitely not disappoint. It sports the Moto Mods magnets on its rear. This allows it to expand its functions by attaching to Moto Mods accessories, such as the Hasselblad camera, Incipio battery pack, JBL speakers, and Moto Insta-Share Projectors.
Prices
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are pegged at starting prices of $649 and $769, respectively, and will launch globally on September 16. No price for the Moto Z, yet, but following the trend of previous Motorola phones, it could come in at around $650.
