'Mad Men' Season 6 Costume Designer Gets Own Show

The costumes of AMC's hit drama "Mad Men" have always been a point of interest, from aiding in the re-creation of a long gone era, to inspiring current fashion, like the recent Mad Men line from the clothing retailer Banana Republic. Now the woman behind those costumes, Janie Bryant, is being rewarded with a show of her own.

"Mad Men" costume designer Janie Bryant is working with E.J. Johnston and James Deutch to create a new competition based fashion reality show, according to Deadline. Johnston and Deutch created the NBC hit competition show "Fashion Star."

"We loved the idea of tapping into someone like Bryant, who is great at finding a look and designing costumes for film and TV and seeing how it translates into the real world. Janie totally gets how to translate Hollywood to mainstream fashion," James Deutch said in an interview with Deadline.

The process of designing for television is more complicated than perhaps the viewers imagine. In an interview with The Atlantic, Janie Bryant explained her process.

"I begin every season with six weeks of prep to create an overall closet for each character. Having been the costume designer for all five seasons now, I have an idea of who these characters are. My job as the costume designer is to tell a story about these characters through their costume design, the "Mad Men" costume designer explained.

Bryant's work has been celebrated in the past. From 2004-2006 she worked as the costume designer for the show "Deadwood," and she earned an Emmy for her work on that show.
