'Mad Men' Season 7 Spoilers: Creator Talks Don and Megan's Split, Drops Hints About Finale
"Mad Men" fans must wait until 2015 to watch the rest of season seven, but series creator Matthew Weiner promises this week that "there's more story left to tell."
Notoriously secretive about the plot on "Mad Men," Weiner made surprising admissions about Sunday's mid-season finale and what is to come on the AMC drama in a recent interview. First, the creator and executive producer addressed the end of Don and Megan Draper's marriage.
"That relationship was permanently damaged when Don made her quit her job," Weiner told Vulture. "In fact, is was permanently damaged when she decided she didn't want to work in advertising back in season five. I'm always looking at it to say, 'What would really happen?' There's a lot of anger in some of the other breakups but people didn't expect Betty to still be on the show even though she has Don's kids. Life isn't really like that. It would be great if you could just say 'this is over' and hand somebody papers. That's not how it works. They really tried."

Weiner went on address fans' assumptions about Don's relationship with Peggy (Elisabeth Moss), and their possible romance.
"I'm gonna admit it's not on our mind," the EP said in a rare moment of transparency.
Instead, Weiner explained that his main character is wholly distracted from women as his professional career hangs in the balance at the end of the mid-season finale. Nevertheless, the creator promised that the main characters on "Mad Men" have a lot of loose ends that will be tied up by the series finale next year.
"The challenge for the season and ending the show is that it's new ground for me," Weiner explained. "I've never done it before, the writers have never done it before … What you don't want is a bunch of scenes checking in with people. The challenge is to continue to tell a story and hopefully people will feel that way when they see the second half of the season. All I can say is this split-season thing has made us really focus on the main characters, and there's more story left to tell."
"Mad Men" season seven will resume on AMC in April 2015.
