The Cotto-Canelo showdown will be another chapter in the rich history of boxing competition between Mexico and Puerto Rico.

During the weigh-in at the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay, Alvarez brought up the boxing history between the rival countries, calling the upcoming bout a historic fight, and referring to Cotto as a "true warrior" he will be honored to face in the ring, the Mexican fighter told reporters at a press conference after the weigh in.

According to former professional boxer and Barcelona Olympics gold medalist, Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez through his company, Golden Boy Promotions, the Cotto-Canelo bout may deliver even more excitement than the fizzled-out Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in May.

With boxing fans disappointed over that May 2 "fight of the century," the Cotto-Canelo fight may serve to reignite the boxing fever.

Both professional boxers will be meeting each other in the ring with a 155-pound catchweight. The fight will be Cotto's second title defense after he defeated Sergio Martinez by a 10th round knock-out in June 2014 to win the world title. In June this year, he also won by knock-out against Daniel Geale in the fourth round.

Alvarez, meanwhile, has won three consecutive fights since he lost to Mayweather in September 2013. He qualified for this upcoming bout with Cotto after knocking out James Kirkland in the third round on May 9.
