Netflix Plans To Release 30 Anime Series In 2018
Anime is slowly becoming mainstream in the United States and Netflix is one of the companies paving the way. The streaming service recently announced their plans to release 30 new original anime productions in 2018.
The streaming giant is reportedly spending $8 billion on original content next year with a considerable chunk of this being invested in new anime. This is after their investment in anime received favorable results in terms of viewership.
Netflix recently released an original anime series "Neo Yokio" created by Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig. The series features the voices and Jaden Smith and Jude Law as a young demon slayer and butler respectively.

Aside from original anime, the series also dabbled in live-action adaptations of popular anime titles. They recently released a live-action movie adaptation of the beloved anime and manga series "Death Note" starring Nat Wolff and Lakeith Stanfield and Light and L respectively.
The company has revealed that they plan to balance out their content with 50 percent being original programming in a variety of genres. This move isn't coincidental as Disney previously announced that they will be removing its content from the streaming service in 2019 in order to host them in their own platform.
Without the content such as the highly-lucrative Marvel and "Star Wars" franchises, Netflix is left in a very tough spot. The service currently relies on deals with third-party content providers for most of its offerings which could prove devastating if they suddenly decide to follow Disney's move and force the company to create more original content.
Original content doesn't come free however, and over the years, the company has invested billions into producing new shows and films, some of which at a loss. For the moment at least, it seems anime seems to be a profitable genre for the company hence their decision.
In addition to anime, Netflix is also planning to produce 80 original films over the course of 2018. This comes after the company announced it was raising its subscription prices for users in the United States.
