New TV Shows to Investigate Religious Themes, Hauntings, the Supernatural

A new host of TV shows set to debut in the fall have one thing in common: religious themes. There is a wide array of religious topics to be covered, and nearly every main channel has at least one show that features religious themes.

To begin with, there is NBC's "Constantine," which features Matt Ryan as the DC Comics character who struggles with his faith and the sins of his past. However, he doesn't have much time to focus on those things as he is forced to defend humanity against the forces of darkness.

The CW will take a very unique look at the Virgin Mary biblical story with its new series, "Jane The Virgin." Gina Rodriguez plays a young, hard-working, religious woman named Jane who is accidentally artificially inseminated. How will her family, with their strict moral code, deal with the pregnancy, and how will Jane go about explaining her pregnancy?

"Proof" is the newest drama from TNT and features Jennifer Beals as Dr. Kathryn Russo, a surgeon who begins investigating supernatural phenomena. At the same time, she must cope with the loss of her teenage son and try to repair her damaged relationship with her daughter. The show, produced by Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"), will feature resurrections, out-of-body experiences, and alleged hauntings.

With the popularity of movies such as "Heaven is for Real," "Son of God," and "Noah," it's only natural that there would be a host of TV shows featuring religious themes. This spring saw the adaptation of the French classic, "The Returned," known here in the U.S. as "Resurrection." Fox had a dynamic hit with "Sleepy Hollow," which featured the Apocalypse and the battle between good and evil.

Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey are already hard at work on another TV series about the time period after Jesus' death and resurrection, tentatively titled "A.D." It is set to air in 2015 and will feature the prominent character, the Holy Spirit, though it's unknown how they will do so.
