The New York Jets on Monday decided to release veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie — a move seen as a way for the team to have more salary cap flexibility heading into the new season. The player who owns the record of making the longest play in NFL history officially ends his second stint with the Jets.
With the release of the four-time Pro Bowler, the Jets now have the luxury to use the $8 million the team saved for another player who might be able to help them more than what Cromartie could have contributed, especially that free agency will start in less than a month from now. But it's kind of sad really considering that he would have been willing enough to accept a smaller payday just to be able to stay and play for the team. But that's already out of the question right now.
Cromartie made his New York comeback last offseason together with another cornerback Darrelle Revis. Both players eventually had a productive season under head coach Todd Bowles, though it was pretty clear the Cromartie wasn't the same player he was when he first played for the Jets. He started in 15 games last season but didn't make a single interception. The contract he signed was for four years, but the Jets realized they needed to take another direction.

Obviously, this move was more of a strategy to increase financial stability for a team looking for a better finish next season. The 31-year-old couldn't capitalize and make a good impression in his return, which is a stark contrast to his performance in his first stint from 2010 to 2012. When the opposing team's quarterbacks threw in his direction, they had a significantly better passer rating.
With him gone, the team is likely going to consider either Dee Milliner or Marcus Williams as replacement to start with Revis.
