Nintendo 3DS Sales Unaffected By Nintendo Switch
Sales of the Nintendo 3DS is unaffected by the Nintendo Switch. This is what Nintendo wanted to make clear after the company announced that the hybrid console is expected to surpass the lifetime sales of its predecessor the Wii U.
In a recent financial briefing, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima made a point to show that the Wii U's successor didn't hamper sales of 3DS hardware in any way. Nintendo released a graph showing the handheld's sales numbers remained stable following the Switch's release and even experienced a massive surge in sales.
"Even after Nintendo Switch sales began, sales of the Nintendo 3DS family remain stable, as you can see here," said Kimishima.
According to the company, shipments of the Nintendo 3DS are already approaching 70 million units. Meanwhile, sales of the Nintendo Switch are at 7.63 million over half of the Wii U's current sales standing at 13.56 million.
First-party game sales are also surging. Switch games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has already surpassed 4.7 million copies while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 boast is more than 4.4 million and 3.6 million respectively.
While success is definitely there for both Nintendo consoles, there's no doubt that the company has a major emphasis on the Switch. Recently, Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aimé said they are targeting an "extra Nintendo twist" for the Switch Online Service.
"I'm not going to tell you exactly what it's going to look like. We'll share more about that next year," said Fils-Aimé in an interview with Forbes. "But what I can tell you is that our vision is to have a robust online environment that not only provides the mechanism for you to have your multiplayer experiences and matchmaking, those elements are minimum."
It's a pretty nice way to get Nintendo fans to get riled up for 2018 and convince them to get their hands on their console this holiday season, if they haven't already that is.
