North Carolina Gay Marriage Amendment: Your Reactions

While President Obama's campaign says he is "disappointed" with North Carolina's constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, many Americans have also sounded off about the news.

North Carolinian voters approved of strengthening a state law that already outlawed same-sex marriages, and have adopted to reinforce the definition of marriage as solely a union between a man and a woman, making if the 30th state to adopt such a ban.

On The Christian Post Facebook page many readers congratulated North Carolina on the vote.

"NC voters kudos for u for upholding biblical marriage principles…." posted Vanessa.

Scott J. Buccine Sr. said, "Amen! Continue to spread the TRUTH God's word, not man's! If you're not bold for Christ, you don't have the foundation to be calling yourself a Christian! Bold in Christ, not in man! How dare anybody put themselves equal to or above our God! Soli Deo Gloria!"

Cecile Westfield-Houston weighed in saying, "A homerun for GOD! Back to how nature GOD/nature planned it to be."

However, Brad Borst felt the vote did not reflect biblical standards, "Apparently our brothers and sisters in the Great State of north Carolina have kinda forgotten the Golden rule and the basis of Jesus's message to love one another as he loved them. Not to mention our own Constitution. For shame people :(."

But Meg Kizer responded, "The golden rule does not excuse sin. The bible is clear about sexual immorality - homosexuality. We can love a person while hating the sin. You as a Christian can't only talk one verse and use it as a foundation. Take the bible as a whole and use it as your foundation."

Jerry Massey suggested another solution, "Somebody explain to me what would be so wrong with lgbts creating their own label for their unions and petitioning the voters for equal financial/legal rights? huh? what?"

Tony McCutchan, whose comments appear to suggest he does not believe in God, implied he believes the issue at the core of marriage is government entitlements. He said, "Marriage comes with government entitlements. Everyone should be "entitled" not just the delusional."

Non-believe Liam Devlin also suggested Christian opposition to gay marriage amounted to hypocrisy. He said, "And its funny how you quote the bible when I guarentee you are all wearing garments made of mixed fabrics, eat pork and shellfish and drink on the sabbath."

To which Lisa Collins Gormont replied, "Liam, respectfully, if you are going to try to argue against Christians you need to actually *study* their Bible. If you did you'd understand why this is an invalid argument...just as the whole Golden Rule and "do not judge" are invalid arguments in this discussion. Those are sound bites that are thrown in the mix from people who don't KNOW the Bible because they'd rather just talk than actually take the time to *learn*."

On Twitter, there were also mixed reactions to the vote.

"Seriously North Carolina," asked Sierra. "You do realize we are ALL humans right?"

Calvin wrote, "Rights aren't supposed to be voted on, that's why they're called rights. North Carolina, you're a sad, sad state."

Laura posted, "So, when will North Carolina ban divorce? That's definitely in the Bible."

"Getting married was one of the greatest things I have ever done," wrote Comedian and actress Ellen Degeneres on Twitter. "I hope everyone in North Carolina gets the same opportunity someday."

However, Twitter user Kevin wrote, "Shout out to North Carolina for rightfully recognizing marriage is for a Man and a Woman."

"North Caroline did something right," posted Tony.

Cameron French, Obama campaign spokesman, said in a statement Tuesday that the ban on same-sex unions is "divisive and discriminatory."

Tami Fitzgerald, chairwoman of the executive committee for the pro-amendment Vote for Marriage NC, said at a victory rally in Raleigh, "We are not anti-gay - we are pro-marriage. And the point, the whole point is simply that you don't rewrite the nature of God's design for marriage based on the demands of a group of adults."
