3. Ohio legalizes marijuana

While Ohio’s Issue 1 took up much of the spotlight heading into Election Day, another ballot measure dealt a blow to social conservatives. Ohio voters also approved Issue 2, which would legalize recreational marijuana in the state. Unofficial results show that 57% of Ohio voters favored making the Buckeye State the 24th in the U.S. to legalize recreational marijuana, while 43% opposed the ballot question.

Tuesday’s results for Issue 2 represent quite a turnaround from 2015 when Ohio voters previously weighed in on the legalization of recreational marijuana. Data from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office reveals that in that year, voters rejected an amendment that would have granted “a monopoly for the commercial production and sale of marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes” by a nearly 2-1 margin.
