Philadelphia Eagles Trade Rumors 2016: New Five-Year Deal for DE Vinny Curry
It's about time for the Philadelphia Eagles to value what they already have. The team announced that they finally agreed to terms with defensive end Vinny Curry, with both parties shaking hands to a five-year deal worth $47.25 million, including a $23 million guaranteed pay.
Although Curry's production has been on a career low this past season, where he only managed 3.5 sacks in 2015, there is hope that he'll eventually show up this year. Originally a pass rusher, his recent struggles must be attributed to the fact that he saw himself getting transitioned to outside linebacker. His playing time on the field was also reduced.
After playing four seasons with the Eagles, he has come up with 62 tackles in total plus 16.5 sacks so far.
And with Chip Kelly's departure and Doug Pederson taking control of the team, the Eagles are expected to go back to the 4-3 defense they've been known for before Kelly took over. With that in mind, Curry might get a little more involved this next season, which is why the team decided to keep him.
The 27-year-old from Marshall is one of the few players the Eagles have signed and retained, including two tight ends in Zach Ertz and Brent Celek, as well as tackle Lane Johnson. Also, the team is currently working on a deal to sign Pro Bowl defensive lineman Fletcher Cox.
The recent signings are a result of the retention of one man who fell to obscurity when Kelly was hired as head coach. This man is the team's former general manager Howie Roseman, who is known to get young players to re-sign with the team before they even think about becoming free agents.
In Kelly's time with the Eagles, Curry was relegated to a reserve role simply because the defensive scheme was not his forte. Because the new defensive coordinator will bring back the 4-3 scheme, Curry should have more room and time to play this time.
