Pittsburgh Steelers Roster News: James Harrison Playing Next Season
It is not a common sight in the NFL for players to remain active and competitive after reaching the age of 35, especially if that player is a linebacker who constantly endures every grind in a grueling and highly physical season. But James Harrison is unique and he'll be returning to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers next season, which is set to be his 14th.
The 37-year-old outside linebacker's return next season was confirmed by his agent, Bill Parise, saying that the league's "Iron Man" is still under contract for a year. He added that they are bent on honoring that contract for the benefit of Harrison and the organization, which the team will clearly agree on.
There was some uncertainty about Harrison's career after he said that he was not really sure of coming back and because his contract stipulated that he had the right to opt out. But all that seemed to have changed when he met with head coach Mike Tomlin, wherein he came out of it saying that he's giving it another shot this season. He'll earn $1.25 million in base salary if he makes his return for the 2016 season official.
For general manager Kevin Colbert, the Steelers will always want him, suggesting that he still can contribute in another capacity — mentoring the team's younger guys. "James came back and did a great job not only on the field but he was really a great mentor to our younger players," Colbert added.
In his 13 years in the league, he made 76.5 sacks, putting him at 37th in the history of the NFL. And since the Steelers are on a rebuilding mode, the presence of Harrison will clearly be needed to guide everyone else. With a base salary, the team won't be hurt by the investment they're making for the veteran for one more year.
