Reports have confirmed that police recovered four AK-47 rifles and a motorcycle when they made the arrests. The Boko Haram Islamist sect is well-known in the region for using gunmen on motorcycles to carry out their attacks, and have used the technique to kill dozens of police officers and politicians over the past 12 months.

In a separate attack, a Christian preacher was gunned down by the motorcycle gunmen on Tuesday. Minister David Usman, and one of his work colleagues, from the Church of Christ in Nigeria were killed.

Revealing the indiscriminate brutality of the Boko Haram terrorists, on Monday a Muslim cleric was also shot dead outside his home, having previously openly criticized the militant group.

Police have struggled to gain control of the situation and attacks have been continuous over recent weeks. Despite making hundreds of arrests, and implementing a ban on all motorcycles at night, the bombings and assassinations have continued to take place.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect has accused prison authorities of killing its members once they have been arrested, and have used that as an excuse to target prison warders in recent attacks.

However, this allegation has been flatly denied by authorities. They have said that some prisoners have been freed on bail, and others have been transferred to other areas of the country.

Boko Haram have reported to the BBC that it carried out a series of attacks as a protest following the inauguration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
