Rihanna's Dreadlocks Shock Fans, 'American Idol' Performance Wows (VIDEO)

Rihanna has received widespread applause for her performance during the "American Idol" finale on Wednesday night, but fans were less than impressed with her new hairdo.

Although fans are used to the 24-year-old frequently changing her hairstyles, many were shocked when she debuted waist length dreadlocks and took to social networking site Twitter to vent.

"I actually liked Rihanna's performance on A.I. tonight. The only thing that threw me off were those dreadlocks," Freddy tweeted.

"WHAT ON EARTH IS RIHANNA THINKING GETTING DREADLOCKS!!!" Sophie Pattison tweeted.

"Dreadlocks are disgusting #idolfinale #rihanna," Chris Johnson tweeted.

The Bajan singer took to the stage to perform her new single "Where Have You Been," and appeared to be energetic despite recently being admitted to hospital.

Rihanna tweeted a picture of her arm hooked up to an IV and while it was reported that she had been admitted for "exhaustion" and "dehydration," critics suspect that her hard partying is to blame.

Rihanna's mother, Monica Fenty, has reportedly staged an intervention in a bid to curb her binge drinking and excessive partying, according to The Sun UK.

"Monica's moving in to keep an eye on her," a source told The Sun adding "Rihanna's dad, Ronald, was a crack addict. Monica's refusing to let her go down that path."

The "We Found Love" singer has been spotted partying hard in recent weeks at various events including a Queens, N.Y. strip club and the Coachella festival.

Fans became increasingly worried when Rihanna posted a controversial picture on Instagram recently which led to speculation that she may be on drugs.

She was seen sitting on her bodyguard's shoulders laying out a white powdery substance on his bald head alongside the carefree caption "Memories don't live like people do #coachella."
