Royal Baby Name is Prince George Alexander Louis; Did Kate Middleton, Prince William Honor Queen's Father?

Kate Middleton and Prince William reportedly named their son George Alexander Louis two days after he was born in London.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with baby George, made their first post-baby appearance Tuesday outside of St. Mary's hospital in Paddington and William revealed that they were working on a name. On Wednesday afternoon, Clarence House confirmed that the royal couple had agreed on a name.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis," Clarence House tweeted Wednesday.

"The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge," another tweet clarified.

Baby George, who weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz, will one day become the 43rd English monarch as he is now officially the future King of England. Middleton and William, both 31, are believed to have named the newborn after his great great grandfather George VI, who was the father of Queen Elizabeth II, according to USA Today.

A total of six King Georges have worn the crown since the German-born George I, who was the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, acceded to the throne in 1714.

The name Alexandra is thought to be a reference to old kings of Scotland and Louis, which is the last of William's three middle names, reportedly honors Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten.

On Tuesday royal author Charles Kidd predicted that George would be a top pick as a potential name for the royal couple's son.

"I do think that Prince William is quite a traditionalist - that's my feeling," Kidd, who is editor of Debrett's Peerage and Baronetage, told Yahoo.com.

"The fact that he chose to use the royal dukedom (of Cambridge) and has followed royal precedent, I wouldn't be surprised if they use a name that is already familiar in the royal family - something that has royal associations," he explained adding that James and Henry were also potential names.

When asked about his new son, William joked about his appearance while Middleton referred to her journey into motherhood as being a "special" time.

"He's got a good pair of lungs on him that's for sure. He's a good boy, he's quite heavy ... He's got [Kate's] looks, thankfully," William joked to reporters.

"It's such a special time. I think any parent probably sort of knows what this feeling feels like," Middleton said.
