"Samsung Electronics is preparing for two-track strategy to approach premium phone market more in detail," ET quotes an unnamed source from the industry.

In the past two years, Samsung has taken its cue from its biggest rival Apple by releasing two premium smartphones each year. However, the South Korean firm has recently taken a more daring course by launching several flagship units within just a year, Tech Insider reports.

In 2014, Samsung released four flagship models — the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and the Galaxy Note 5. All four units were launched in different colors and storage capacities. The move has helped lift the company's mobile business a bit as it had notably been having difficulty competing in the now saturated market, the report relays.

The change in strategy is part of Samsung's bid to boost its sales of premium smartphones in 2016. Samsung is aiming to sell around 400 million phones next year, a number that is a bit lower than this year's target, the report explains.

The South Korean tech giant is planning to wrap up the development of the new smartphone by January 2016. It will initially produce 5 million Galaxy S7 units, 1.6 million of which will be Galaxy S7 Edge.

As of now, no exact release date for the Samsung Galaxy S7 has been announced. More details about the upcoming flagship smartphone are expected to surface in the next few weeks.
