Samsung is planning to unveil flexible smartphone and television displays at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

The first panel to be shown off by the company will be a 5.5-inch flex display meant for smartphones. The second will be a 55-inch version created for television sets.

The first of these will feature 1280 x 720 HD resolution, making it full HD.

Samsung has been working on flexible displays for quite some time. CNET was able to see a 4.5-inch WVGA display that Samsung created at CES 2011. This year the company will have a lot more to show off.

Devices with these flexible displays could be made available to consumers by Samsung as early as April of this year.

Samsung is reportedly working on something called "Project J" that would have them release smartphones with unbreakable screens by April of next year.

Mark Newman, an analyst at Stanford Bernstein in Hong Kong, weighed in on Samsung's plans, confirming that a flexible or unbreakable display will make its way to a Samsung flagship device in the near future.

"Eventually, they'll (Samsung) have unbreakable and flexible displays," he said. "Either the Galaxy S4 or S5 will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014. That's going to be a game-changer."

The display on the Galaxy S4 is already rumored to be bigger. It will also have a higher resolution- pixel density jumps to 441 per inch from the Galaxy S3's 306 ppi- which is better than the iPhone 5's 326 ppi.

Samsung is major backer of the organic light-emitting diode, better known as the OLED display. These OLED panels could be replacing their glass substrate with plastic material in order to make it sturdier and less breakable.
