Seahawks QB Russell Wilson Asks for Prayer After Announcing Divorce From Wife of 2 Years

Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks NFL team, has asked for "prayers" after announcing that he and his wife of two years, Ashton, will be divorcing.

Wilson, who recently led his NFL team to the Super Bowl title in February 2014, announced his split with his wife via the Seahawks, ESPN reports. "I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don't come easy."

"Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter."

Wilson, 25, reportedly began dating his wife, formerly Ashton Meem, when the two were in high school. According to CBS Sports, the couple managed a long-distance relationship while Wilson played football at North Carolina State University and Ashton attended the University of Georgia. Wilson then transferred to the University of Wisconsin where he was then recruited by the Seattle Seahawks during the 2012 draft. Wilson married Ashton in Richmond, Virginia, in early 2012, shortly before he joined the northwestern team.

The NFL quarterback made a possible reference to the divorce via his Twitter page, retweeting a post from the handle Scripture_Truth on Wednesday that read: "God never promises the absence of storms. He just promises to walk with us through them."

The professional athlete has not been shy in expressing his Christian faith, often posting religious-themed messages via social media. The quarterback also discussed his faith following his team's Super Bowl XLVIII win against the Denver Broncos in February 2014, crediting his win and his athletic talent to God. "God's given me so much talent …," he told reporters.

Wilson also participated in an interview with four of his teammates and Mars Hill Church Pastor Mark Driscoll ahead of the Super Bowl game. During the interview, the quarterback expressed his faith in God, saying, "Jesus is love! At the end of the day, we are all looking for someone to comfort us, somebody to be there for us at all times."

"When we are at the worst times of our lives, when we are battling with something, or struggles, whatever it may be, when we are at our highest point as well, when things are going really well, we want somebody to comfort us and be there for us and to say, 'Well done.' That's Jesus!"
