'Sister Wives' Polygamy Ruling in Utah to Result in More Plural Families
The cast of TLC's "Sister Wives" have spoken out about their feelings upon hearing the news that the judge struck down a law banning polygamy. They hope that the verdict suit they brought against the state will result in more polygamous marriages like their own.
"The first thing I thought about was all those families that for 100 years had lived and loved in obscurity, just in secrecy," patriarch Kody Brown told the press in a phone interview. "Not being able to claim their family or openly love one another. Though we support the choices of other people organizing their families however they choose, our argument has always been very different. What we've been looking for is simply to live free and to be able to live our religion without the threat of prosecution."
"It's been incredible not having to live in fear anymore and being able to fully claim who we are. No more fear now," added Christine Brown, Kody's third wife. "We wish the same for every plural family in Utah."

The family brought the suit after leaving the state for fear of being separated by officials. The Brown family, which consists of Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn and their 17 children all moved to Las Vegas. Several of the children are now grown and have gone off to college to make their own ways in the world. Now they may return home to Utah and have their own plural families if they so choose.
The Brown family became famous for going public with their polygamous lifestyle, which they have always said was to refute the image of Mormon polygamist Warren Jeffs, who is currently serving a life sentence in jail for sexually assaulting underage girls he called his brides.
"We were tired of Warren Jeffs being the only image people had of polygamy," Janelle Brown told the press.
"Sister Wives" airs Sunday nights on TLC.
