Man discovered Dead is Son of SC Baptist Convention President

A man who was found shot dead Monday in Charleston, S.C. has been identified as the son of the president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

Charleston police said 33-year-old Brian Eliot Holmes died from a single gunshot wound after being found unresponsive Monday morning in a 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

According to reports, the car Holmes was driving crashed into a car that was parked on America Street. Police closed that portion of the street for several hours during the investigation.

His father, the Rev. Sonny Holmes, is lead pastor at Northwood Baptist Church in North Charleston. He also is president of the S.C. Baptist Convention, serving a one-year term in the honorary position.

The convention's Web site says about 1,800 churches statewide are members.

A spokesman for the convention said no statement has been issued by the family, but that the group would distribute one later to the media if the family desires.

Police said they found Brian Holmes after responding to a call about a traffic accident in the neighborhood, which is described as being a low-income area.

According to Charleston police spokesman, the preliminary investigation did not reveal a motive or suspect.

Police have not as yet revealed any further information about the shooting.
