Stardew Valley Developer Won't Patch Bizarre But Amusing Bug

A recently discovered bug in "Stardew Valley" will not be patched out according to the game's developer. The weird bug allows players to create any item they want based on their character's name and works on all systems including the Nintendo Switch.

"Harvest Moon" homage was first released back in 2016 and was positively received by gamers and critics alike. The Switch version of the game was released earlier this month with rumors of a PlayStation VITA port still being considered.

Given this much time and popularity, it's probably a given that players would have found out an exploitative bug or two and were subsequently patched to oblivion. However, one particular bug seems to have gotten on the good side of the game's developer.

"I am aware of it, but I don't think I want to fix it," said developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. "It's not game-breaking, it's kind of amusing, and the likelihood that someone would randomly stumble upon it is extremely low. So I feel like it's okay to leave it, and actually kind of fun."

"Stardew Valley" allows players to name their character anything they want which can then be exploited for this bug as revealed by IGN. Instead of a name, they must name their character using a string of 1-3 item code values, each surrounded by brackets for example[611][577][532] or just[72].

By naming their character this way, the game will cause the items players indicated to spawn in their inventory whenever their name is referenced within the game. This can also be done when naming animals although it is only effective once. Using this bug allows players to accumulate items without much effort include high-value items although they have to live with their character's weird name.

While it has all the hallmarks of a cheat, Barone still refers to the exploit as a bug saying that there aren't any cheats intentionally built into the game. According to him, the item exploit is not intended so it is definitely a bug.

"Stardew Valley" is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, and the Nintendo Switch.
