'Steven Universe' Season 3 News, Release Date: New Season Kicks Off With Month-Long Special Event On May 12

After a long hiatus, "Steven Universe" is returning to the small screen this month with a four-week special event.

The month-long season 3 intro, titled "In Too Deep," will air prior to the actual season 3 plot. Originally slated for a June premiere, the third season of "Steven Universe" will debut on May 12.

In a recent interview on the Comic News Insider podcast, "Steven Universe" creator Rebecca Sugar said that the new season of the Cartoon Network animated series will have one episode that is almost entirely musical.

While music is, indeed, a very important element of "Steven Universe," with many of Steven's problems resolved via songs, Sugar confirmed that the upcoming season will be a very musical one.

Sugar also spoke about an upcoming musical episode in which Pearl sings a solo verse. "We have a full musical episode coming up — it has seven songs in eleven minutes!" she said.

According to the "Steven Universe" creator, the character wasn't originally included in the episode, until the artists came up with the song, prompting the "Steven Universe" team to write Pearl in. As Sugar explained in the podcast, this is how the storyboading and song writing usually occurs on "Steven Universe."

"We'll usually write premises and outlines [of the songs] so we usually plan for it in an episode — we'll have the broad strokes of in the course of the song, they have to learn this, or they start out feeling this way… we'll have the arc of the song," Sugar said (via Movie Pilot).

Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, Peridot, and Steven appear in the first season 3 promo clip, which was shared by Entertainment Weekly. The trailer also shows Malachite, who fans know as the evil product of Jasper and Lapis Lazuli's fusion. In the season 3 teaser, the villain emerges from the bottom of the sea, following a period of imprisonment. "I can't wait to tear your gems apart!" she declares. To defeat Malachite, the Crystal Gems merge to form Alexandrite.

"In Too Deep" will debut with two back-to-back episodes on Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. ET on Cartoon Network. Afterwards, the special event will continue with one episode per week for the next three weeks. It will be followed by a "Summer of Steven," which will run from June to August.
