Super Mario Galaxy 3 Still Possible After the Release of Super Mario 3D World, Says Creator

Over the last few years everyone's favorite plumber Super Mario has been in many different game series. From Super Mario Galaxy, to 3D World and Land, the New Super Mario Bros series, and even the Olympic and Super Smash Bros games.

With all this change, now different developing teams are working on the various games apart from each other. One of the most beloved of franchises is Super Mario Galaxy, which had two releases on the Wii. Since the last one, three Mario games have come out with no word on a Galaxy 3.

"Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn't mean we'll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game," Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in an Iwata Asks session. "The same team can't make both at the same time. And we can't bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it."

The two series' are distinctly different as the Galaxy games have an open world 3D adventure feel, and the New Super Mario Bros and 3D World are more of a 2D platformer.

"Personally, I would like to take on a variety of new challenges with Super Mario Galaxy and design 2D Super Mario games in an easy-to-understand way within certain restraints," he continued.

According to ShackNews, game producer Yoshiaki Koizuma likes #D World because it provides a broader audience as it has many characters and play modes to choose from. Galaxy has a bit more restraint.

"I think the deep-blue image of space and the impression you get from the title was more geared toward boys," Koizumi said. "I felt like a player-character you might want to choose besides Mario was necessary to convince, say, my wife to feel comfortable picking it up and playing. This time, we welcomed in Princess Peach, so you can play as a female character. In that way, I feel like we filled in a piece that had been missing."

Super Mario 3D World will be released on December 13 for the Wii U.
