Super Smash Bros 4 Characters: 3DS Version of Pikachu Revealed (PHOTO)

Super Smash Bros 4 director Masahiro Sakurai showed off a screenshot of Pikachu from the 3DS version of the upcoming game in order to give gamers a chance to see the unique animation of the handheld.

"Pic of the day. The characters' thick outlines are only available in the 3DS version. Only the external outline is thickened and won't appear in instances like when the hands or feet are overlapping. It's got a softness to it and is not just black," he said in the description of the Pikachu photo that can be seen here.

Last month, Sakurai hinted at the possibility of a new Pokemon from X and Y coming to the game.

As he has done so far with all the updates, Sakurai dropped little hints with game screen shots on the Super Smash Bros 4 site. This time, he showed off a picture of Pokemon's Pikachu standing alongside Pokemon X's mascots cover character, Xerneas.

Pokemon has always been a big part of the Super Smash Bros franchise. Pikachu and Jigglypuff were in the first game, while those two and Pichu and Mewtwo were added for Melee.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario, and Pokemon Trainer were all characters. Every game has had Pokemon-themed levels and items as well.

It is uncertain if Xerneas will be a playable character but it will be in the game in some fashion.

The characters confirmed for the game so far are: Mario, Luigi, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Pit, Olimar, Toon Link, Princess Peach, Sonic the Hedgehog, MegaMan, Marth, the Female Wii Fit Trainer, and the Villager.

The website Newegg.com lists the Wii U date as Dec. 31 2014 and the 3DS version of the game as being available on May 16 2014.

SSB4 Wii U is $59.99 and SSB4 3DS is $39.99.
