Tesla Model 3 Base Price To Be $35,000

The Tesla Model 3 is expected to be a mass-market vehicle with a base price of around $35,000 and will be the basis for the company's other cars.

Although the carmaker has not yet confirmed it, the Tesla Model 3 will probably not have the high-end aluminum body of the Model S and Model X, but will instead use steel. The upcoming vehicle will be unveiled this March, according to Business Insider.

There have been rumors that Tesla will unveil a Model Y crossover vehicle alongside the Model 3 this March, but the latest information indicates that only the latter will be revealed. The said car is positioned to help Tesla sell 500,000 vehicles by 2020, Bloomberg reports.

Pre-orders for the Model 3 will begin right after the unveiling in March, and production will commence in 2017. The base price of $35,000 is still without the government incentives, the report details.

While he was in Hong Kong this week, Tesla chief Elon Musk said the Model 3 is a slightly smaller version of the Model S, but it will not have as much whistles. He had previously said the upcoming model will be 20 percent smaller than its predecessor, the report relays.

In addition, the upcoming car is expected to have a range of at least 200 miles per charge. In October 2015, Tesla Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel said the model will have new battery, motor technology, and vehicle design. This way, the car will become more affordable and adaptable.

There are also reports saying the Model 3 will include sensors for autonomous driving, which is in line with Musk's prediction that all new cars will have the feature in 10 to 15 years.

It remains to be seen if the Model 3 will truly be an electric vehicle for the masses or a luxury car. It can be remembered that the Model X SUV released last year has a price tag of $100,000. Another yet unconfirmed detail is the incorporation of the Falcon Wing doors into the next model or a totally redesigned set of doors.

More information on the Tesla Model 3 is expected to surface after it is unveiled in March.
