'The Good Wife' Shocker Sparks Reactions, Season 3 Spoilers Revealed

"The Good Wife" fans are reeling from Sunday's shocking episode that killed off a major character, and for more spoilers, read on.

In an unexpected series of events, a disturbed client (portrayed by Hunter Parrish) grabbed a courtroom guard's gun and fired off shots, fatally striking his attorney, Will Gardner (Josh Charles). The actor had the television series' lead male role. Minutes after the episode aired on Sunday, "The Good Wife" creators Robert and Michelle King posted an open letter to fans in lieu of their shock.

"We, like you, mourn the loss of Will Gardner," the joint letter began. "And while Will is gone, our beloved Josh Charles is very much alive and remains an integral part of our family."

The show's creators decided to write Will off of "The Good Wife" this season "for personal reasons," but the actor has directed an upcoming episode as he transitions out of his role as a regular. Marking his exit, show runners wanted to add tragedy to the storyline.

"The brutal honestly and reality of death speaks to the truth and tragedy of bad timing for [Will and Alicia]," the Kings wrote. "Will's death propels Alicia (Julianna Marguiles) into her newest incarnation."

The death of Gardner will without any doubt lead "The Good Wife" into a whole new direction, and fans are wondering what the rest of season three has in store for them. The death of Gardner indicated the end of the investigation into Peter's alleged campaign theft.

Meanwhile, season five still has eight more episodes, and the Kings assured fans that they will not be "all tears- there is comedy too." The forthcoming episodes will see Michael J. Fox, Dylan Baker, Dallas Roberts and Stockard Channing.

"The Good Wife" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST. This Sunday, March 30 will see an episode entitled "The Last Call."
