Missionaries killed in Boxer Rebellion – Aug. 22, 1900

This week marks the anniversary of when several missionaries, among them Carl Lundberg and his wife, Augusta, were killed for their evangelism work during China’s Boxer Rebellion.

The Swedish-born Lundbergs were sent by the Christian & Missionary Alliance to be missionaries in 1893 and were in Kwei, Hua-Cheng when a rebel army stormed the area.

Days before his martyrdom, Lundberg sent a letter to the Holy Union Mission in Sweden in which he encouraged them to send more missionaries to China after “the storm is over.”

“Let not your hands fail and do not lose your courage. What we sow shall bear fruit in its time,” he wrote, adding, “I do not regret that I came to China.”

“I know the Lord called me here, and his grace is enough for me. The way he leadeth is the best, His will be done. We shall meet at his right hand.”
