This week in Christian history: SBC apologizes for slavery, Matthew Henry dies, Exodus International closes
Exodus International shuts down – June 19, 2013
This week marks the anniversary of when Exodus International, a Christian ex-gay ministry that had advanced efforts to change or at least reduce same-sex attraction, decided to close down.
Exodus’ board of directors unanimously voted to shutter the ministry following a year of discernment, with Exodus President Alan Chambers issuing an apology to the gay community for his organization’s actions shortly before the decision.
"I have heard many firsthand stories from people called ex-gay survivors," wrote Chambers at the time. "Stories of people who went to Exodus-affiliated ministries or ministers for help only to experience more trauma. I have heard stories of shame, sexual misconduct, and false hope.”
“In every case that has been brought to my attention, there has been swift action resulting in the removal of these leaders and/or their organizations. But rarely was there an apology or a public acknowledgment by me."
Restored Hope Network, another ex-gay ministry, released a statement at the time calling Exodus a “venerable organization” and compared its closure to “the unnecessary death of a dear friend.”
“While some falsely proclaim that a transformed life is optional for Christians, the united witness of Jesus and the writers of Scripture are clear: In God’s grace true saving faith results in a life of holiness and sexual purity,” stated Restored Hope Network.
