'Thor: Ragnarok' to Begin A Three-Movie Arc For The Hulk
"Thor: Ragnarok" will kick off a three-movie arc featuring the Hulk according to actor Mark Ruffalo. According to Ruffalo, the character's story arc will be included as sub-plots in three upcoming Marvel films rather than a standalone film.
After missing out on "Captain America: Civil War" along with Thor, the green-skinned, muscle-bound, angry alter-ego of Dr. Bruce Banner will appear as a gladiator pitted against the blond Norse God also known as "his friend from work."
Ruffalo explained that the catalyst for the Hulk's story development is the fact that he can remain the Hulk on Sakaar where he's been living comfortably as a gladiatorial champion. He has been a sort of a celebrity there in the two years since the events in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"The rules don't apply anymore. That's what's so confounding to Banner and frightening," said Ruffalo. "That's kind of the exciting progression of the Banner/Hulk relationship moving forward."
He adds that anger is no longer the only reason that he turns into the Hulk. Now they have this other thing going between the Hulk and Banner that will carry out through the next two movies. The events in "Thor: Ragnarok" will be the beginning of a three-movie arc.
According to Ruffalo, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige asked him what he would like to happen if he was to star in a standalone movie. That was when Feige brought up the idea of dividing Ruffalo's vision into three films with the final one being "Avengers: Infinity War."
The fact that Universal Pictures still retain the rights to a standalone "Hulk" film is the reason that a film based on Disney's take on the character "will never happen" according to Ruffalo. With this in mind, a story arc divided between other standalone Marvel films seems to be the only way to show the character some love on screen, in addition to what Black Widow is doing of course.
"Thor: Ragnarok" is set to hit theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
