Traditional Marriage Group Launches 'Chick-fil-A Wednesdays'

A national organization advocating for defining marriage being between one man and one woman has announced that they intend to hold a weekly "Chick-fil-A Wednesday."

In response to the success of the Aug. 1 observance, the National Organization for Marriage began having weekly "Chick-fil-A Wednesdays" beginning Aug. 15.

Jonathan Baker, spokesman for NOM, told The Christian Post that having weekly observances of "Chick-fil-A Wednesday" is meant to "help people to realize they are not alone in their support for marriage."

"The mainstream media, by repeating the talking points of same-sex marriage activists and perpetuating the falsehood that same-sex marriage is inevitable, has helped to make people feel that they are alone in their support of marriage," said Baker.

"Chick-fil-A Wednesdays is the perfect antidote in that it encourages people to stand together, to meet with like-minded individuals, and to understand that they are not alone. Supporters of traditional marriage are not hate-filled bigots, they are your neighbors across the street."

As part of the endeavor, NOM has set up a website, www.thankchickfila.com, which allows for visitors to send a thank you card to the chicken sandwich restaurant.

"On August 1st, hundreds of thousands of Americans from all across the nation came together in support of marriage, free speech, and religious liberty, voting with their pocketbooks to defend the Cathy family against outrageous attacks from politicians trying to silence their beliefs," reads the site.

"Meet with friends and family to share a delicious meal, meet new friends, and stand up for marriage and freedom. Show the world how marriage supporters register their protest against negative attacks - positively, peacefully, and cheerfully!"

Back in July, Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy remarked in an interview that he supports the biblical definition of the family unit. He also remarked that America was "inviting God's judgment" for saying "we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage."

Amid the controversy, many conservative leaders called for a day in which people could show their support for the fast-food chain's position as well as Cathy's right to freedom of speech and religion. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee led the highly successful Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on Aug. 1, which was reported to be a record-setting sales day for the company.

NOM's announcement of a weekly "Chick-fil-A Wednesday" observance comes as academic institutes consider severing their ties with the company. Davidson College in North Carolina already suspended Chick-fil-A from campus events and New York University is mulling over banning Chick-fil-A products from its campus due to the restaurant chain's ties to socially conservative groups.

"In the wake of the recent controversy over Mr. Cathy's remarks, the NYU administration has asked the University Senate to take up the issue of Chick-fil-A's status on campus when it reconvenes this fall," said Philip Lentz, director of Public Affairs for NYU, in an earlier interview with CP. "As of right now, the Chick-fil-A on the NYU campus is closed for the summer and is scheduled to reopen when students return for the fall semester."

"What we want people to do is to visit Chick-fil-A on Wednesdays as they are able, show solidarity with the Cathy family, and enjoy a great chicken sandwich," said Baker of NOM to CP.

"We want to encourage people to keep these positive developments moving. The lie that same-sex marriage is inevitable is a lot harder to keep going when we stand together."
