Twitter's 6th Birthday Today

It has been six years today since Twitter saw its firs tweet by Jack Dorsey on what was just "Twttr" back then.

"Just setting up my twttr," posted the mocroblogging network's co-founder and executive chairman on March 21, 2006.

The online social networking site enables users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters known as tweets. The site rapidly accumulated international popularity following its official launch in July 2006.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., Twitter hosts over 350 million users as one of the top social networks of today.

"It took Twitter 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day to reach the first billion tweets, and it took about 18 months for the first 500,000 users to sign up," reported The Next Web.

As of December 2011, Twitter received an average of approximately 23.6 million unique visitors per month, according to Nielson.

The most popular Twitter user, Lady Gaga, has over 21 million followers. Countless other celebrities are able to communicate with fans and share news on the social media site; even the First Lady Michelle Obama has a Twitter account as of January this year.

Celebrities such as actress Alyssa Milano are celebrating Twitter's sixth birthday by posting messages on the social media site.

"Happy Birthday Twitter! The first tweet was 6 years ago today," wrote Milano.

"Happy Birthday Twitter!" media mogul Rupert Murdoch posted. He called Twitter a "remarkable company that's helped change the news biz and the world. Congrats to @jack and all friends at Twitter."

The famous Vermont-based ice-cream company Ben & Jerry's wrote on their Twitter account: "Happy 6th birthday, #Twitter. This pint's for you," and attached a photo of cake batter ice cream with one lit candle in it.

Other Twitter users are acknowledging their favorite site with birthday wishes as well.

"Happy 6th birthday @Twitter," wrote Leigh. "Can't imagine life without you. Thankful 4 all my twerps & the daily sharing/learning. thank u @jack."

"Happy birthday to Twitter! Time does fly when tweeting," posted Barbara.

Girl Up wrote, "Happy birthday Twitter! Thanks to YOU we were able to connect girls in Uganda w/their peers in the U.S."
