'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Season 2 News, Spoilers: Lisa Kudrow to Return in Season 3?

The second season of the Netflix sitcom "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" ended with the show's main characters breaking new ground in each of their lives.

Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) made amends with her long-lost mother Lori-Ann (guest star Lisa Kudrow), Titus (Tituss Burgess) began dating Mikey (Mike Carlsen) and then left to be a performer on a cruise, Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) got back in touch with her Native American heritage and discovered how to be a better parent, and Lillian (Carol Kane) fought hard for her beloved neighborhood.

In one of the show's most anticipated scenes, Kimmy finally reunited with her mother and attempted to get answers about her childhood and her kidnapping. While she didn't exactly get what she expected from Lori-Ann, Kemper says that the reunion was nonetheless an eye-opening experience for Kimmy.

"The big takeaway from meeting her mom and confronting her is that this did not play out how she wanted it to play out," the actress told The Hollywood Reporter. According to Kemper, Kimmy may not have gotten the answers she needed, but that's OK. And it ties into the season's theme, which is that life doesn't always provide clear, well-defined answers.

"Things are ambiguous and they don't always work out how you want them to work out," Kemper explained.

As for potentially reuniting Kimmy with Lori-Ann in the sitcom's next season, the actress answered, "I think that the door is still open."

"I don't think there's any closure one way or the other, in a way that's final," she said.

In a separate interview with THR, Kudrow confirmed that she is open to returning to the show. "I would love to!" she said. "It was fun and I like the character. It just depends on where their stories take them next season."

The "Friends" alum also spoke about why she gave an easy "yes" to appearing on the show, telling THR that she is a big fan of the Emmy-nominated sitcom and of creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.

That the actress was a fan was a stroke of good luck, as Carlock told THR that Kudrow was their first choice to play Lori-Ann. According to the "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" showrunner, they were looking for someone who exuded "optimism," "sunniness," and "strength."

"I just think there is no actress other than Lisa who encapsulates that," he said.

The second season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is now streaming on Netflix.
