'Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Cast News, Update: New Synopsis Revealed; Second-Half To Introduce Yet Another 'Mysterious Organization'

There's only a couple of weeks left before The CW's hit supernatural drama TV series "The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 returns to the small screens from its holiday break and fans have been hankering for some updates on what to expect in its mid-season premiere.

A report from Entertainment Weekly cited executive producer Caroline Dries' revelation that the opening episode will focus on Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and his struggles while being trapped inside the Phoenix Stone.

"The episode plunges the audience head first into a not-so-typical Damon mess. It's a grueling, frustrating, at times even a little hilarious examination of one of our favorite and most damaged characters," the showrunner told the media outlet. "Turns out that in the murk of Damon Salvatore's psyche, redemption isn't easy to find."

International Business Times, meanwhile, shared the synopsis for "Hell is Other People" and it indicates that the Salvatore will be forced to confront a traumatic experience from his Civil War days and overcome "his darkest demon" in order to free himself from the Phoenix stone. In Mystic Falls, Bonnie (Kat Graham) will find herself racing against time to get Damon out before the effects of the Stone changes him forever.

The episode is set to air on Jan. 29.

Meanwhile, a casting update from TVLine revealed that the show has enlisted "American Horror Story" star Mouzam Makkar for a recurring part in the series. The actress will play the role of Alex, a "beautiful, charming and cocky researcher at the head of a mysterious organization." She was further described as a "viper in sheep's clothing" or someone not to be trusted.

More interestingly, Dries revealed, this time to TVLine, the newcomer will have ties to Enzo's (Michael Malarkey) story.

"As he's trying to find his place in the world, she comes in and says, 'Let me help you out with that.' Is she good? Is she bad? What's her bigger agenda? We'll pull back her layers as the season goes on," the showrunner went on to tease.

The character is slated to be introduced in Episode 14 of the show's current season.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 airs Fridays at 8/7c on The CW.
