Following the news that one of its main cast members, Kat Graham, will exit the series at the end of season 8, "The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder now says that the series will air one last season before signing off for good.

Speaking from the Walker Stalker Con Nashville on Sunday, April 10, Somerhalder said that the series will soon come to an end.

"We have decided to do one last season to sort of do it justice," the actor said. "Work very hard on it, my role is shifting in the show, and we have a lot to do basically."

Despite the actor's announcement, a spokesperson for The CW told The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, and other media outlets that no decision has been made about concluding "The Vampire Diaries."

However, fans have long suspected that the popular supernatural drama series could soon be bidding fans a final farewell. Speculation intensified when Graham, who plays the witch Bonnie Bennett, recently announced that season 8 will be her last on "The Vampire Diaries."

On Sunday, April 3, Graham told Us Weekly during the iHeartRadio Music Awards that she will be exiting the series with season 8 and that it will be hard for her to say goodbye to the "Vampire Diaries" cast and crew. Graham's impending exit follows that of "TVD" stars Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, and Michael Trevino, who played Tyler Lockwood. Dobrev and Trevino exited the series after season 6.

"Nina has always said that if there's something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it," "Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec told EW at the time. "When she left, she said, 'I want to see this character to its end at the end of the show, so I can't wait to come back and put her to bed again.'"

"The Vampire Diaries" is currently about to wrap up its seventh run. The show received the green light for an eighth season in March.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
