Every Nov. 11, the United States remembers those who fought for the country in a federal holiday known as Veterans Day.

The observance is often celebrated with parades, honoring veterans of various conflicts, and, for some parts of the nation, a day off school or work.

Veterans Day also has an extensive history going back to the end of World War I, a global conflict in which the U.S. played a belated yet important part.
