Washington Nationals Trade Rumors: Yoenis Cespedes Reportedly Offered Contract in D.C.
The Chicago White Sox are hesitant in signing free agent superstar Yoenis Cespedes because the Cuban is looking at getting more than just a three-year term. And with the hesitation comes regret because the outfielder is reportedly interested in signing with the Washington Nationals.
According to multiple reports, the Nats have taken it all in, offering Cespedes a five-year contract that's worth nine figures. This, of course, is something he has been looking for in the market from the day he became a free agent.
Chicago was supposed to be the new frontrunner in the Cespedes sweepstakes, but they couldn't offer him more than three years even if they didn't have the risk of surrendering a draft pick.
Cespedes is definitely a "must-have" type of player for several MLB teams looking for an upgrade in offense. Chicago could have benefited a lot from him since the team needs a definite improvement in their offense, as well as their outfield defense.
After helping the New York Mets reach the World Series, Cespedes' value increased exponentially. Aside from his renowned offense, he also is a pretty great corner outfield defender. The only reason why he's still out there is because he's making a stand in trying to get the most lucrative deal possible. Obviously, the Mets would love to re-sign him, but the financial aspect of it is impossible to do a compromise.
Cespedes came to the Mets' backyard in a trade deadline deal with the Detroit Tigers. Although their fans never thought he could be that effective, now it looks like the fairy tale marriage in New York is going to be short lived. The Cuban star hit 17 homers with 44 RBIs in just 47 games for them.
In the event that he finally agrees with the contract offer from D.C., it'll be the last "big name" deal for any free agent this offseason after two other stars committed and signed with their respective teams, with Chris Davis opting to re-sign with the Orioles and Justin Upton landing a lucrative one at Detroit.
